His back was against the fencing as he walked sideways to the large S logo sign and then he jumped. He didn’t stop, pause-no. It wasn’t like in the television shows where there is time to call the police- to talk him down. No. His mind was made up. He was struck immediately by a tractor trailer and was killed. Of course I was in shock and screaming as I called 911. I didn’t have time to even think, let alone get out of my car to try and stop him. My heart broke! How hopeless must this young man have been to take his own life! My heart broke further when in reading the news coverage the main story was not the tragedy of the loss of this young life. It was the 3 hour traffic delay. That day my spirit was crushed. I couldn’t recover for quite awhile. I’m still not sure I’m over it or that I ever will be. God and I processed why I had to be there. What did he want me to see? What was the purpose in it all if I couldn’t save him? In my processing with God the sense of his hopelessness was overwhelming to me. And so I made a promise to God; No one will ever sit “across the table” from me without hearing about the hope of Christ… the ONE TRUE HOPE  we have in this world. I will take every bit of my gifting, calling, experience, and hard-earned wisdom to deliver that message until I see that hope face-to-face in heaven.
